Jyl Fountain, ceramicist
Having trained in Fine Art, I now work in my preferred medium of clay at my South London studio.
Clay carries its own geological and cultural history and this aspect – of continuity and change, the layering of memories and, the urban culture in which I live – inform my work. I enjoy the immediacy of soft clay and how it can record gesture and time. Collecting clays from various parts of the country, I play with slips, glazes and firing temperatures exploring the transformation of clay into ‘permanent’ yet ‘fragile’ ceramic.
